FAQ for RLI (Robust Laser Interferometry)

Is RLI portable?
Yes, RLI is portable.  It has been onboard ships and submarines, it has been used outdoors to monitor bridges and can fit inside the trunk of a car.

How much does RLI weigh?
RLI consits of a laser controller and a laser head.  The control unit is supplied in a heavy-duty 4U case with wheels, so that it can be transported easily.  The entire case and control unit weighs about 45 pounds.  The laser head is supplied in a separate case, which weighs about 5 pounds (laser head and case together).

Where can RLI be used?
Wherever accurate measurement of vibration and acousitc emissions (AE) is required.  RLI has been used in manufacturing plants, power generation facilities, onboard ships and submanrines and in laboratories.

What is meant by the term "non-contact"?
RLI is an advanced form of laser interferometry - the laser beam is the only part of the system that impacts the surface to be measured.  There are no accelerometers or strain gauges or piezo-electric sensors to install.  In addition, RLI enables the end user to measure vibration and acoustic emissions from at least 50 feet away (assuming there is a line-of-sight from the RLI to surface in question).

What kind of performance can I expect from RLI?
The performance of RLI is its most important benefit.  Measurement bandwidth of effectively 0 Hertz to 500,000+ Hertz and dynamic range of 180 dB, measured in velocity and acceleration, provides a level of linearity, resolution and overall performance and flexibility that is just not available from any system currently on the market for measuring vibration and acoustic emissions.

How does RLI peform in real-world settings?
The robustness of RLI, in noisy industrial settings, is another important benefit of the system.  No other device or system currently on the market can perform like RLI in situations where there is excesive "background noise".  In addition, RLI is much less affected by temperature fluctuations, humidity and EMI at the measurement point.

How flexible is RLI?
"Out of the box", the system's measurement bandwidth is  effectively 0 Hertz to more than 500,000 Hertz.  It is one system that can operate effectively at 2 Hertz or 200,000 Hertz.  End users do not need 'a priori' information to select the correct acceleromter for a particular application.  This can help to substantially reduce overall set-up time.

What capabilities does RLI possess?
RLI provides analytical tools and features for sampling and data processing including FFT and enveloping processing.

How can I purchase RLI?
RLI can be purchased in three different ways...
Purchase a system, lease a system or purchase our turnkey measurement service for as little as one day.

How can I learn more about RLI?
Contact LaserSense via phone, fax or e-mail (see contact information below).  Our team possesses well over 100 years of combined experience in condition monitoring and predictive maintenance and would be glad to work with you to determine if RLI is right for your particular situation.

Finally, we are very interested in partnering with universities, corporations, individuals and government laboratories to continue application-specific development of this important technology.
